Soothing Salt

- Salt can be added to bath water and will replenish natural moisture and bring the skin back into balance.
- A salt bath is also a good way to relax if you are feeling anxious or having trouble sleeping.
- It can also assist in easing arthritis, sore joints and muscles and also relieve the symptoms of a cold by helping the body to release toxins.
- Salt's disinfectant properties help the fungus of athlete's foot from spreading and it regenerates the skin, making it more able to fight the infection.
- Gargling with a saltwater solution can moisturise and disinfect a sore throat.
- Brushing your teeth with a saltwater solution helps control the formation of tartar and prevent cavities.
- A saltwater compress can ease pain from kidney infections, liver or gall badder problems, stomach/abdominal cramps and urinary tract infections.
- Inhaling steam from a hot salty solution can ease colds and asthma

Ingredients
180 g unsalted butter (softened) 95g soft brown sugar 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest 3 eggs lightly beaten 125g self raising flour 75 g wholemeal flour 1/2 teaspoon mixed spice 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 125ml milk
410g tinned pie apple 25g flaked almonds 1 tablespoon soften brown sugar extra
Method
· Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease a 20cm spring form cake tin and line the base with baking paper.
· Cream the butter and sugar in a bowl with an electric beaters until light and fluffy. Beat in lemon zest. Add the eggs gradually, beating thoroughly after each addition.
· Transfer the mixture into a large bowl. Fold the sifted flours and cinnamon alternating with the milk. Stir until smooth.
· Spoon half the mixture into the prepared tin and top with 3/4 of the apple. Then place the remaining cake mixture into the tin and press the remaining apple around the edge and top of the cake. Combine the mixed spice, extra sugar and flaked almonds and sprinkle over the cake.
· Bake for 1 hour, leave in the tin for 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool. Enjoy with a cup of tea.

To make a wonderful sugar scrub that exfoliates while it moisturises is easy peasy, see below: Ingredients
Empty Jar Sugar Olive or Almond Oil Essential Oil (like peppermint, lavender, rose, jasmine)
Method
· Sterlise your jar by placing it in boiling water and allowing it to dry, alternatively you can place it in the oven on low heat.
· Fill your jar 3/4 of the way full with sugar and then tip it out into a bowl.
· Then fill your jar with 1/4 oil and then pour into the samw bowl and mix well.
· Add a few drops of essential oil or a combination of oils
· Carefully pour the mixture into the jar, seal and label with a waterproof label.
Voila your sugar scrub is ready to be used in your next shower!

UWA runs a range of different short courses throughout the year aiming to provide intellectual and creative opportunities for everyone, regardless of age or qualifications. Classes can vary from a few hours to a day, weekend or a few weeks. Highlights of the Summer School include the Summer School Picnic Concert, new ideas with Todd Sampson, conversations with John Pilger, and an evening with Peter Cosgrove.  Ingredients
4 lemons (rind and juice) 2 cups of castor sugar 5 eggs
110g butter
Method
· Grate rind of lemons and squeeze out juice.
· Put sugar, rind and juice, butter and beaten eggs into a large basin on top of a pan of simmering water.
· Stir with a wooden spoon until thick and curd coats the back of the spoon.
· Pour into warm sterile jars, cover, seal and label.
· Seal the jar so that it is alright and store the curd in the fridge (should keep for about a month).
